Když se bojíme změny

Introduction
Today we’re going to talk about something that affects all of us: change.

We welcome some changes. We eagerly await others. But there are also changes that we fear and would prefer not to accept at all.

After all, people like certainty. We want to know what tomorrow will bring, where we’re headed, or what lies ahead. But life rarely allows us to have everything planned out.

Some things end; new things begin. People come and go; our jobs, relationships, and health change; and our own perspectives on the world change.

So perhaps the question isn’t how to prevent change. It’s much more important to learn how to navigate life’s changes.

A Chat
People have a natural need for certainty. We need to know where we belong, what we can rely on, what tomorrow will bring, and what will happen a month from now. Certainty gives us a sense of security and, essentially, allows us to plan our lives. We build homes, start families, and look for work that gives us a sense of purpose. We experience relationships and traditions we want to return to. And we long for some kind of anchor we can rely on. But most of the time, that’s not how it is...

Life is wonderfully unpredictable.

Just when we think we know things well and have them all figured out, change comes. Something ends, something begins; someone enters our lives and someone else leaves. Our jobs, our relationships, our opinions, our opportunities—or even our own bodies—change. Simply put: change!

And then we ask, “Why is everything in my life always changing? Why can’t everything just be calm for a while?” We feel like things are going well, that everything has its order, and that life is flowing as it should. And then suddenly, that unexpected period arrives when one change follows another.

But that’s just what life is like.

It’s not a straight line along which we’ve set out once and for all in the right direction. In fact, it’s a path that opens up to the countryside for a while, then climbs a hill, leads through a valley for a bit, and sometimes disappears around a bend beyond which we can no longer see.
Life, after all, comes in waves.
There are times when we feel like everything is going our way. We’re content, we have strength, things are going well, and the future looks very clear. And then, out of nowhere, moments of uncertainty, change, obstacles—even loss—come along.

All of this, of course, is part of our lives. Periods of peace and tranquility, as well as periods of uncertainty.

Nature shows us this every day. Spring, summer, fall, and winter come and go. A tree blooms in the spring, grows in the summer, sheds its leaves in the fall, and seems to come to a standstill in the winter. And no one pauses to wonder about it or says that fall is a mistake or that winter is a failure. We accept nature’s rhythm as something natural. And so we should accept a similar rhythm in our own lives.

We, however, strive earnestly for something else. We try to control our lives.
We want to know what’s coming. We want to have a plan. We want to secure our future and remove anything from our path that might disrupt our vision.

But life cannot be completely planned. The more we try to keep everything under our control, the more painfully we experience the moment when something slips away from us. And we realize that we need to distinguish between what we can influence and what we cannot.

We can make decisions. We can work. We can nurture our relationships. We can strive to do the right things. And we can learn from our mistakes. But we cannot command time to stop. We cannot prevent all changes. We cannot ensure that nothing will ever hurt us. And we cannot know in advance all the paths we will have to take.

And from this fundamental realization, trust is born.

Not blind trust that everything will turn out well. But the belief that even what we do not understand today may have meaning in our lives.

After all, obstacles do not come to destroy us. They are here so that we can learn something about ourselves. It is only in difficult situations that we discover how much strength we have. It is only through loss that we realize what we took for granted. It is only when something doesn’t work out that we discover what we could have done differently. And only then do we understand that the path we chose was just one of many.

And yes—some lessons are joyful and some are painful. And both transform us.

Life puts obstacles in our path not to take something away, but quite the opposite... It is precisely by overcoming them that we discover our own abilities, recognize our weaknesses, and begin to understand what is truly important to us.

So is it okay that my life is constantly changing?

Yes. It’s okay. Eventually, we won’t view change as a problem, every uncertainty as a threat, or every obstacle as an injustice. Life changes simply because we are alive. And along with it—our life—we, too, change. Finally, we’re able to understand these changes, accept them, and take something away from them.

And that’s how we gain experience. And that experience doesn’t come from what we’ve read or what someone has explained to us. It comes from what we’ve actually lived through. We learn through our own lives.
And most importantly, we begin to trust. To trust that we can take the next step, even if we don’t see the whole picture, even if we don’t actually know what’s coming next.

And that is precisely one of life’s greatest gifts—that it is always leading us somewhere, always teaching us, and always giving us the chance to become the person we weren’t just yesterday.

In Conclusion
Try to reflect today on a change you’ve experienced recently. Maybe it’s a change you resisted. Maybe you’re still going through something and don’t yet know where it will lead you.

This time, try to look at everything a little differently.

Not as something that’s pulling the rug out from under you, but as a journey through life. A journey whose next part you don’t yet know, but you’re not afraid of it. You have faith.

And if you ever feel like you need to step away from the daily hustle and bustle for a moment, come to the Spiritual Center in Vranov. The tranquility of the monastery, the church, and the surrounding countryside—there, you don’t have to know all the answers. You simply stop, take a breath, and let some things just be for a while.

And then perhaps you’ll find the courage to take the next step.

We don’t have to understand life in its entirety. It’s enough to trust the path ahead.
And take that step.
