The Lost Nobleman

The year is 1240. Marshal William sets out on a hunt, but loses his way in the dense forests of Vranov. He wanders for hours, helpless and exhausted. His suffering is compounded by a lingering eye ailment. And so, in the darkness, surrounded by silence and without hope, he begins to cry out for help. He turns to the Virgin Mary with a plea to show him the way and deliver him from his distress. And just at that moment, when he had no human support left, the long-awaited answer came. At the very moment when he felt he was at the end of his strength and raised his plea to the Virgin Mary, something happened that changed not only his life but the entire place.

A Vision Between Two Oak Trees

A vision suddenly appeared before Vilém—the Virgin Mary standing between two mighty oak trees. The presence of this Marian apparition filled the nobleman with peace and light—a light that not only dispelled the darkness around him but also filled his soul. His blindness suddenly recedes, and Vilém opens his eyes once more—this time not only physically, but also spiritually. He knows that he has been saved and, at the same time, guided. And the gratitude in his heart turns into unshakable determination. He knows now...! This very place—the place where something so extraordinary happened—must not be forgotten.

A Little Church as a Token of Gratitude

Upon his return, Vilém decided that he would not express his gratitude through prayer alone. At the spot where the Virgin Mary had appeared to him, he had a small wooden chapel built. He then placed a precious statue of the Virgin Mary, found nearby, inside it. The statue, depicting a young girl already visited by the Holy Spirit in a posture of prayer, became a symbol of this event and is one of the most precious Marian treasures in Moravia. For Vílém, however, it was not merely a structure of wood and stone—for him, it was a edifice of faith and hope. It soon became a witness to the stories of more and more pilgrims. People began to come to this site of the miracle to pray, give thanks, and make petitions. They sought healing and strength for their lives there. News of the miracle spread throughout the region, and the place took on a special atmosphere—one steeped in prayer, quiet, yet full of life. Thus, the small church became the first chapter in the history of the great pilgrimage site we know today as Vranov u Brna.

From a Small Church to a Cathedral

The number of pilgrims continued to grow, the congregation expanded, and the small wooden church could no longer accommodate all the pilgrims. Therefore, it was replaced by a larger, brick Gothic church. And when the Princes of Liechtenstein took over Vranov in the 17th century, they decided to build a magnificent cathedral on this sacred site. In 1630, the foundation stone was laid for the Baroque Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, which to this day forms the heart of the entire pilgrimage complex. Together with the Pauline monastery, the site became an important spiritual center for many centuries, attracting thousands of pilgrims. This church still stands today as a testament to an ancient miracle and the devoted faith of entire generations.

Statue of the Virgin Mary – the heart of the pilgrimage site

At the heart of this place, in the church, stands a statue of the Virgin Mary. She is depicted as a young girl in prayer. To this day, it remains one of the rarest monuments of its kind in Moravia. It embodies profound symbolism—simplicity, purity, and trust. Its power endures even after centuries. Pilgrims, whether believers or simply seekers, find in the statue of the Virgin Mary the image of someone who understands them, who hears their silent words and wishes. That is precisely why Vranov remains not only a place of history but also a living presence that touches everyone’s heart.

A Parallel with Saint Francis of Paola

It is no coincidence that another story of a miraculous healing of the eyes is associated with this pilgrimage site—this time that of Saint Francis of Paola, the founder of the Pauline Order. He, too, had an experience in childhood when his eyesight was threatened, yet thanks to his faith and surrender to God, he was healed. The similarity between the two stories is more than obvious: both Vilém and Francis were confronted with darkness that clouded their eyes, and both found the light through their faith. It is as if both were granted the gift of seeing the world anew—not only with their physical eyes but also with the eyes of the heart. And therein lies the profound message that Vranov conveys—that the light of faith is stronger than any darkness.

A Miracle That Lives On Today

When you enter the church in Vranov today, you are enveloped by an atmosphere filled with prayer and quiet contemplation. The statue of the Virgin Mary, enshrined on the main altar, serves as a reminder not only of the ancient miracle of the healing of the nobleman Vilém, but also that each of us can find a way out of the darkness in our lives. Just as Vilém did long ago, we too come today with our prayers, seeking the light, and often leave transformed. Vranov is thus not merely a place of historical memory, but a living pilgrimage site where heaven and earth intertwine.
